Mammals of the Northeast Workshop
DATES
Feb. 20, 2004, 7-9 p.m.; Feb. 21, 2004, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Feb. 22, 2004, 8 a.m. - 12 noon
DESCRIPTION
Mammals are perhaps the most difficult group of vertebrates to study, since they are secretive and often nocturnal. This workshop will provide an overview of northeastern land mammal identification, ecology, and tracks and signs. It includes indoor sessions with slides and other visuals; identification of tracks, scats and skulls; detailed life histories of some of the more common mammals; and field time to look for mammals and their signs.
The preliminary itinerary for the workshop is as follows: Friday, February 20, 7-9 p.m. - Distribute materials; opportunity to purchase texts; review of NJ mammal species using slides and other visuals.
Saturday, Feburary 21 9-5 - Indoor session on animal tracks, followed by a field session on tracks and signs on the grounds of Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary. After lunch, an indoor session on identification of mammal skulls and the in-depth ecology of some common mammal species. Late in the afternoon, we'll return to the field to look for mammals, including some attempts at predator calling.
Sunday, February 22 8-12 - Meet at Scherman-Hoffman and car caravan to the Great Swamp for a field session in the Wilderness and Management areas there.
