In the beginning only the dragons ruled Pacalis, and it was a land of equality and peace. Then the first of the sentient creatures came over the sea to settle in this unknown land. The dragons, planning to keep up the peace they had held so long, made an agreement with these new beings. They wouldn't harm anything or anyone and in return they wouldn't be harmed. Yet the dragons wanted a way to make absolutely sure the agreement would stay intact, so they did something without knowledge of these new creatures. They chose a small elven girl, took her from her home and taught her all of their secrets, which was an enormous amount. While doing so, they told her about her new objective in life. She would become the very first Bonder. She would travel the lands of the newcomers Bonding each person on their tenth birthday to a Guide. These Guides were animal-like, and the nature of the animal corresponded to the nature of the person Bonded. The girl was the first person to receive a Guide. Her companion was a phoenix, which became the creature that symbolized the Bonder. The dragons quickly spread this new "faith" and all was peaceful for many years. Eventually Pacalis split into three separate countries; Creda, Trylan, and Ajes. The dragons were uneasy at the separation, seeing as they had worked hard to keep the realm at peace and whole, but stood by. Slowly at first, the continent began to change. Tyrants showed up more often in history and wars happened more often. The dragons lost their hopes of keeping Pacalis peaceful, and so fled deep into the mountain caverns. They are still said to watch over the realm, waiting to come to aid if they are needed.
