Subject: a small dose of nostalgia on a rainy saturday

My message was archived? Oh well, time for another one!

I remember many things about growing up in Canarsie. It was a great place to grow up. It was safe. I wouldn't let my kids walk home from school for lunch like I used to at age 7 back in second grade. I remember the excitement of being in 5th grade (PS115) and having a dollar to go out to lunch with my friends. That was a treat. We'd go to Joes, Domino's or Originals Pizza, get two slices, a coke, ices and a dime change from our buck! Sometimes, we'd go to Sylvia and Pauls luncheonette where you could get a cheeseburger deluxe, coke and a sugar cone of Louis Sherry (or something close to that) ice cream for that same buck. When we went to Bildersee, going out for lunch was like a jail break! There was a great place for Falafel named Irvings, next to Danza. There was always Franks pizza, but I like Ave L pizza a lot more. My ultimate treat was putting a whole small package of Philly cream cheese on an everything bagel that just came out of the oven from the bagel store on 81st and Flatlands. We could ride our bikes from 3 O-clock until dinner. My parents never knew where I was. That's something else my kids will never know. Canarsie definitely toughened us up though. I'm embaressed to say how many times I was on the losing side of a 3 O-clock fist fight. It took a lot of beatings before I finally said enough of this shit and learned how to kick some ass! These are lessons that kids of today won't get because of politically correct, zero tolerance laws motivated by liability worries! Now that was a helluva sentence, huh? Not getting picked for a team in a pick up game because you sucked at that game was another lesson we learned. It was a hard lesson to learn. Trust me, I know! But again, growing up in Canarsie taught us many lessons. But we have become a soft America and IMHO, we can't afford to be so soft anymore. Our fucking enemies sure as hell aren't! OK, I'm starting to ramble. Anyone want to say hi to me, feel free. I get nostalgic like this every so often. I'm fortyfive now. I wake up in the morning and feel like twenty. Then I look in the mirror and say, "Who the hell are you"? That's not funny! I had a lot of friends back in the day. Now the few I still keep in touch with are scattered all over the place. I just want to play one more game of stickball at 276 park with my old buds again. Oh well, time to take the family somewhere. Gotta fly.

Anyone who still remembers what a mazo-thud was or has a vauge memory of mrs Seigal saying etudez,or, better yet mrs Rogers saying DETANTE [ lol ] please be kind enough to respond. It's been a million years and I think we should round up everyone for a party or BBQ or something. So many stories, so much history. We had a great class. Much better memories than high school!!

Aw, heck. Looks like these replies have been archived and I can't see them. But anyway--hello, guys. Susan Grossman here. I'm still a geek but geeks are in this year, and anyway so are most of my friends, so it all works out.

I live in Seattle and I own an editorial firm. I mostly work with science fiction and fantasy, 'cuz they're fun. I still do some acting and directing and musical things, and also art stuff. Married, no kids, too many animals.

I hope y'all are having good lives as grown-ups.

Susan

Yeah, alright...but you're my favorite geek, ok? My only regret with you my dear, is that 30+ years ago, I did not know how to appreciate geekiness. Back then I tried with all my might to avoid becoming a geek. Now, well into halftime, I sorta appreciate some aspects of the whole geek thing. I believe a public apology to you is due, because I know that I tormented you back in the day and in retrospect, it was very wrong to do. All you have to do to see archived Bildersee stuff, is to go to the top of the page and hit the archived links. There are two. Have fun. And Susan, when the world has you down and the stress gets high, please think of Danny Tyroler and myself duking it out in Mr. Rubenstein's class, only using mazo thuds, no other punches or holds. That should put a big smile on anyone, even Ellen Berg! Ciao, Geek.

Susan,

Ah feel your pain! Because Gregg did away with a lot of the archived memories that used to be here, I had to do some digging, but I finally got the link to the page of some classic Bildersee pix thqt should put a big smile on your face. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Bye for now.

>the reunion went great last weekend in canarsie. We met as planned right in bildersee junior high school at 1pm saturday . almost 70 percent of the class showed up from 1973 to 77. Even most teachers we could find came as well (we paid the hotels for those living far away). however many still teach in bildersee. We had lunch in the cafeteria and even got scooter pies and those lil milk containers too.we faked a milk fight. We talked and took fotos and looked at the yearbooks. Many had their old notebooks with notes still legible. We recalled those days of strikes , blizzards, vietnam, laugh in . We played the music from those days on the speaker system in the lunchroom.Mr. Mankowitz ,the lunchroom man now 68 flew up from Century Village florida to attend.

After we walked down the street outside towards flatlands avenue. The old milkboy store is gone but the candy place remains and still sells the bazooka gum and sugar daddys too. we grabbed a slice over on flatlands and bought great bagels on flatlands and 81st. still great taste but 3bucks a dozen Finally we walked the halls of ol bildersee with the then principal who is now retired in boca raton .Finally we played stickball in the bildersee park after kicking the new kids out. We exchanged emails with friends teachers crushes etc. Next getogether will be in sshs but maybe next summer.
This letter is fiction but how many of you would love this to be possible?? Nex summer 06 As usual ill be in brooklyn to visit family that refuses to leave. I always stop by canarsie to take fotos walk abit and always get a few x canarsiers to accompany me. Anyone with me summer 06:

Hey Mitch,
Mrs. Siegel used to say ECOUTEZ. That means listen. We were in the same class and she used to drive me crazy. Also the way she said Mirror it was like MIWA. Just finally had a chance to get on the web site. Talk to you soon.

Yeah, but etudez means study, so there! Hey Sue, what..... you think I'm gonna argue with you over who remembers more francais? Non, Je nais pas stupid! Well not too much anyway. Besides, the frenchies suck bigtime and I have zero respect for those morons. Which reminds me of a real funny e-mail I received. In fact, it is so perfect, that as a former Marine, I have to share it, so here goes....

NEWS FLASH!!!

Tuesday, November 10, 2005 - 09:30 AM President Bush May Send Up To 5 Marines For French Assistance President Bush has authorized the Joint Chiefs to begin drawing up a battle plan to pull France's butt out of the fire again.

Facing an apparent overwhelming force of up to 400 pissed off teenagers, Mr. Bush doubts France's ability to hold off the little ding bats. "If the last two world wars are any indication, I would expect France to surrender any day now," said Bush.

Joint Chiefs head, Gen. Peter Pace, warned the President that it might be necessary to send up to 5 marines to get things under control. The general admitted that 5 marines may be overkill but he wanted to get this thing under control within 24 hours of arriving on scene. He stated he was having a hard time finding even one marine that wanted to help those ungrateful bastards out for a third time but thought that he could persuade a few women marines to do light duty before they went on pregnancy leave.

President Bush asked Gen. Pace to get our marines out of there as soon as possible after order was restored. He also reminded Gen. Pace to make sure the marines did not take soap, razors, or deodorant with them. The least they stand out the better.

Funny thing Dave, isn't it? It's a beautiful spring day today. This is the kind of day you could get three games of stickball in at 276 and still be home in time for dinner. I guarantee you that if we tried to do that today, we'd be unable to walk for a week! That said, when are you available? hehehe

New Year 2007.

Hello peeps!

Well, we're almost there. It is New Years Eve Day. Just prior to the shave, shower & all the rest of that stuff! I thought I'd relax with a cocktail while the rest of my family (girls all) run the gamut of readiness for the evening! I would like to wish you all a happy, safe and most importantly; a healthy new year. I am one of those (apparently not in the majority) people who understand quite fully, the exact nature of the world we live in today. That includes the threat of militant Islam and the collapse of our beloved American society. Let's just say that I was most happy when Led Zeppelin were a thriving, kick-ass band and I could count on Kirk and Spock to explain life to me at a time when I wasn't quite able to do so for myself. Now that I can do it for myself .......
I sincerely wish I could not. Be well my fellow Americans. My sense of "something" that I can not define, is unnerving! We can't (it appears) go back in time. So let's move forward, together, please. Semper Fidelis.

Oh yeah, I've had my song "Promised Land" linked to the front page of this web site for over a year now (lyrics and actual recording of the song) and I've only had one comment?!!!? Doesn't any one else have anything to say? Have you heard it? Go back and have another listen. I'd like to know what you think of the arrangement. Maybe I'll write and record another. That's a threat!

I have the difficult task of informing everyone about some very sad news. How I wish this posting was of a different nature. As you may or may not have heard, Mike Cohen had passed away in Thailand on Tuesday, January 29th ( It is now Jan. 30th there). Arrangements are currently under way for his return home. As soon as details are available from his family, I will notify the board. Please think of the happy times spent with Mike in the three years we were in the same class with him at Bildersee. This is how he would want to be remembered. This is the first of our classmates that I am aware of that has passed away. I hope I don't hear about any others for a very, very long time.
