Subject: JOHN WILSON BOYCOTT 1972

YOU MIGHT FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE BUT I HAVE A AUDIO TAPE OF WINS RADIO BACK IN 1972 ON THE SCENE AT THE WILSON BOYCOTT. PARENTS WERE SCREAMING AND PICKETTING IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL. HARVEY SCRIBNER WAS THE SCHOOL CHANCELLOR AT THE TIME AND ONE OF THE WORST. I WAS IN THE 9TH GRADE BACK THEN AND SOME UGLY GIRL WITH A LONG NOSE NAMED SUSAN TCHALSKY WANTED TO FIGHT ME AFTER SCHOOL BUT REALIZED GETTING HER BOYFRIEND AFTER ME WOULD BE A BETTER MOVE.

I remember it well, I was standing right up against the barricades when the news reporters were broadcasting from the upstairs porch at the corner house when all of a sudden the barricade came flying and were pushed in our faces. Yes, Mayor Lindsay thought he was doing everyone a favor by having us all come together, that didn't work very well! As a matter of fact, I went out with a classmate that lived across the street from the school's super and the super was the one that gave the parent's the keys to lock everyone out and the parents locked themselves in the building. Yes, back in the day...it was kind of exciting! LOL!! My last year was my 9th year at John Wilson (1971), went two months to Canarsie High & then my dad's job transferred and we moved out to NJ...Wonder how they're all doing over there now???

i went to 211 the year of the riots, it was my eight grade year and i remember standing around the corner from the official entrance to the school with my dad and sister and there were 100s if not 1000s of people there, screaming. i was so happy because we had something like 10 weeks of school off.

I was one of those parents who had been there from the beginning. We all knew that we would never win the battle to stop the deliberate destruction of neighborhoods but we took the streets in any case. Had we won that battle Canarsie would be a very different place than it is today.

PLEASE! When other immigrants came here(of all races) we came to work and make something of ourselves. We came for a better life not a FREE RIDE! Take a look around Canarsie now. OPEN YOUR EYES...Its shame. Its filthy and crime ridden. Anyone that denies this is a liar to themselves and everyone else. Ever notice why no one wants to live in areas like this? Its because you get the low class street thugs that expect the world owes them everything moving in to nice areas and ruining it with their uneducated warped thought process. It a shame! The house values, business and community go down the toilet. Why is it that if areas like canarsie are still so nice you don't stay there? Stay there go to school there and stop trying to get into better places. In a few years you will just ruin these areas too!
If you feel Canarsie was not ruined by the kids bused in and the trash that moved in then stay in the great neighborhood that canarsie has become. Why does everyone feel that we muct all get along and live together. Human nature make us wan tto stay with our own kind and we shold leave it like that. Take look at nature. The forests and oceans are filled with species that all stay with their own kind and protect their own. That is the way it should be and we would all get along better. But then again, al sharpton would start crying that the nicer areas are getting better treatment because they are not Black. It hopeless!

I'm hispanic and I grew up in that neighborhood in the projects when they were nice. As far as people sticking with their own kind, well - the projects back then were a mixture of all races and religions - all working families trying to get on their feet. My neighbor and best friend was an Italian immigrant another came from Germany's concentration camp. Although I don't agree that people (nice hard-working people) can't live in a diverse community, I do have to agree with you about the bussing. That was when everything went down hill. The reason, I think, is because they weren't selective in who they bused in. Everyone should be entitled to a good education - providing they want one. I don't think you should bus troubled kids into a good neighborhood - only those who maintain a certain grade average should be allowed to go to a good school - regardless of their color. Unfortunately, that's not what they did. They sent trouble-making "ghetto" blacks rather than the good ones that actually wanted to learn so that they can give a better life to their future generation (and please don't say that there aren't any good ones because there are!) In my opinion, the way they did it ruined it for the neighborhood and help feed the typical black stereotyping.

I remember the strike. I only went to classes 4 days during the whole time. I loved it
