I chose to write about Don McLean’s “American Pie”, which is a great hit from the early 70’s and received a new version by Madonna in the late 90’s. Actually, the original version is the one I’m writing about, since Madonna’s version misses some of the lyrics last stanzas.
I like this song because there is an interesting and great story behind it.
When Don McLean wrote the lyrics he wanted to show how sorry and sad he felt when his favorite rock star, Buddy Holly, died. The song is about the accident with the airplane called American Pie on February 3, 1959 (the day the music died). In that crash, three of the most young rock stars died: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper. McLean worked as a paper boy in that occasion and heard the news when he was delivering some newspapers in his neighborhood. Every line of the lyrics has its hidden meaning. Nowadays McLean doesn’t talk about the song and the real meaning of the lyrics, but when we read the lines we can almost feel McLean’s sorrow with the lost of his favorite musician.
I do think this song melody beautiful, but what really makes me like it so much is its meaningful lyrics and the way people make up stories about it.
