Subject: Task 14

Firstly, after reading the text, I started to reflect upon my second language learning process, and I realize I learned English through Communicative Approach, what gave me the opportunity to develop speaking and listening, but, even nowadays, I have an enormous difficulty on writing skills. I learned through situations that were as real as they could possibly provide, but I fell I wasn’t instigated to reflect upon the hole process. Therefore, I had a lot of help from the people around me, even the ones who were also learning English.
But I didn’t have to rely on my on efforts much of the time. I consider myself autonomous in learning - up to a point. I really haven’t achieve my objective – be proficient in English.
According to NUNAN “Autonomy implies a capacity to exercise control over one’s own learning.” I don’t think I have this capacity, but I’m working on that, studying by myself, having discipline, reading critically and practicing my writing through courses, like this one, and tasks like the penpal one, the News one, etc.
At this text, Nunan says that autonomous learners are able to:
-self determine the overall direction of their learning ,
-become actively involved in the management of the learning process,
-exercise freedom of choice in relation to learning resources and activities.”
In my opinion, when someone reach this level of knowledge on a second language, this person can be considered proficient on that; I can’t say I consider myself proficient yet.

There are some techniques that can be used by teachers to provide students this autonomy, like integrating language content and learning process through learner strategy training, incorporating reflective lessons into your teaching, drawing up learning contracts, learner diaries.

Through Nunan’s text, I could understand that students have a responsibility on their learning process, not transferring all the perspectives to the teacher. The teacher has also the challenge to lead students to think on a second language, developing all the skills. Nunan says that "Having learners evaluate their learning not only develops their self-critical faculties, but also serves to remind them of the goals of the instructional process." Of course this type of teaching is more demanding, but, in my opining, provides a learning with quality, because the student is really involved in all the process.
