Task 14

When I first started learning English, like Trudy (Sandy's friend) I also didn't speak English in my English lessons. In a way because I didnˇ¦t realize the importance of it to my future, and also because I could be spending my time with something more fun. But now, after approximately 9 years learning English; I'm almost an autonomous person, since besides going to class, I'm always trying to find new ways to improve my English, like listening to music and paying attention to what they are singing, to the lyrics; reading books and magazines; watching sitcoms, movies and cartoon, and doing these, I realized that Iˇ¦ve improved not only my listening, but also gained more vocabulary. Like the text ˇ§Autonomy in language learningˇ¨, says ˇ§(ˇK) autonomy implies a capacity to exercise control over oneˇ¦s own learningˇ¨, and ˇ§Iˇ¦ve already defined autonomy as the capacity to control oneˇ¦s own learning in terms of management, cognition and contentˇ¨. One of the reasons of trying to find new ways to improve my English, becoming an autonomous person is that besides realizing that ˇ§(ˇK) English is important to their academic success and future prospects in the worldˇ¨ I also love reading, listening and writing in English.

In my opinion, is very difficult to improve your English, or another second language acquisition just by going to classes; I agree with the author when he says that ˇ§schools appear to play a relatively limited role in shaping the views of learners who develop a communicative orientationˇ¨.

So, if I have to classify my degree of autonomy, I would say that I fit in the third step (ˇ§(ˇK) see learners creating their own goals and contentˇ¨), and not completely, just in part of the final level (ˇ§The final level is one where learners are functioning as fully autonomous learners, transcending the classroom and linking content to the world beyond the classroomˇ¨), all this according to ˇ§Encouraging learner autonomyˇ¨, a fragment of the text.
