Subject: Task 14

I consider myself a very autonomous learner. Ever since I started learning English I always looked for resources outside class that would help me improve my skills: I would translate songs, find pen pals on the internet (a bit later, when I was a high-intermediate student) and I would watch films and sitcoms among others.

Although I acknowledged I was an autonomous learner, I hardly ever reflected upon it. I just realized that whatever I was doing to improve my English was working and I should keep on doing it. After all, I found it extremely enjoyable to watch films and sitcoms, listen to music and learn about other cultures through my pen pals (although I could not have an experience such as Josephine’s (p. 5), I learned a lot from my internet pen pals).

Nowadays, I believe I fit in level 5 of Nunan’s (1995) autonomy levels table. I have become more aware of my learning process and I manage to apply such awareness in the languages I learn nowadays. I have also just finished my graduation research paper on language learning strategies where I have discussed the importance of fostering autonomy in the classroom and helping students become more aware of their learning. I learned a lot from this paper and the data made me reflect upon my own teaching and the grandness of being an autonomous learner.
