Oh, my, I guess it's a world-wide conspiracy against poor Bebe, isn't it?
Meanwhile, more Bebe stories get blown out of the water...remember back when "Almost Famous" came out, and Bebe told everyone that Penny Lane was based on her? This got repeated in more than one review of the film, and Cameron Crowe's comment that Penny was based on a real person didn't help. Anyone seeing the movie had to question that - there was NO WAY that the Penny Lane character could be based on Bebe! Well, now that the DVD is out, with Cameron's commentary, the full story emerges. Several times during the commentary, he states that Penny is based on a Seattle girl named Penny - "the real Penny Lane", according to Cameron. He makes it clear that most of her characteristics - her sweetness, her support of and love for the music, her loyalty to the bands as well as her friends, and her tendency to nurture everyone around her - came directly from the real Penny. Well, come on, now - does ANY of that sound like Bebe?!? He does toss Bebe's name out, however, when talking about the inspiration for Penny and the other girls' look - he mentions "those larger-than-life women around at that time, like Bebe Buell, always hanging on the arm of some star". Gee, what a tribute... oh, wait, I get it - Jason Lee's character in the film is named Jeff Beebe - so HE must be based on her, right? :)
