Subject: I cannot imagine why you'd want to write such a long subject line, but in any case, having scoured the settings, page, I found I could set my subject line to up to 1000 characters, and so now you can prattle on almost interminably without going into the message box

There's no need to apologise for your Dad- I thought he was very interesting. He just put across quite stoically the idea that the prime purpose of a university, as it always has been should be as a repository of knowledge, not in teaching new students about their subject. Which was interesting. He also claimed, apparently entirely feasibly, that universities would quite happily continue to run even without students- that there's both sufficient funding and enough interest in research that the universities would sustain their status. He also went into some detail about the ways of funding of the departments, based on the RAE 5* system, which means that really good researchers in a poor department may not get adequately funded.

It made me all spin out of my perspective and into another one, which I always think is a valuable experience.
