What of benefit raises? Benefits, to include healthcare and retirement, can be up to half of a complete compensation package. In an era of double digit inflation and dollar devaluation, sans an indexed cost of living adjustment, most peoples' purchasing power is being eroded by healthcare costs and net negative real returns on their "investments". Further, given an aging demographic, these expenses are increasing while simultaneously the relative pool of payors is shrinking...this applies to both public and private sectors. There's a reason why the fed just extended its credit limit to...whatever it takes. It has to, it's a function of a debt based fiat monetary system...exponential credit creation offsetting exponential diminishing returns. In and of such a system, value added "production" becomes less relevant, be it good grades or goods in general, relative to the means e.g. students, low skilled workers. It's the math.
