For the second time in a little more than a week, a fire has ravaged multiple buildings in the city of Newburgh, leaving dozens of residents homeless.
A fire broke out in two buildings on Carter Street shortly after 1 1 p.m., resulting in significant damage. Flames and heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the two-story apartment homes, engulfing the area in chaos.
Firefighters on the scene worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and evacuate residents. Despite the intensity of the fire, at least a dozen residents were safely evacuated from the affected buildings. Among them was a nine-year-old boy who recounted how he heard his cousins screaming "fire" downstairs and helped to get his family out of the burning building. "I got my parents -- and then, and then I got my sisters -- and we got out of the house," he said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation as authorities assess the extent of the damage and work to provide support to those affected by this devastating incident.
Over 33 people were left homeless after a fire that consumed a row of homes on Lutheran Street back on March 31.

NEWBURGH – Several people were left homeless when a fire raged through two buildings on Carter Street in the City of Newburgh shortly after 11 p.m. Monday. This was the second blaze in a little more than a week in Newburgh that gutted buildings and left several people homeless.

Flames and heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the two-story apartment homes at 59 and 61 Carter. Firefighters said at least a dozen residents made it out safely.

Nine-year-old Anthony Trujillo said he heard his cousins screaming “fire” downstairs. He said he woke up his parents and brother and helped them get out.

About 75 firefighters were on the scene well past midnight. The cause of the three-alarm fire is under investigation.

This fire was right around the block from where another fire destroyed several apartment buildings on Lutheran Street a week ago Sunday.
