Subject: SO, WHO SHOULD WE BELIEVE?

Lance P poses the question on the Nextdoor app:

SO, WHO SHOULD WE BELIEVE?

The Mayor of Newburgh says one thing and the Mid Hudson News says another. I assume reported facts can be supported by public record.

According to our mayor:
“We made it known months and months in advance what we were going to be doing with this retreat and the cost, and it’s unfair for people to criticize us after we already had public hearings and meetings and had been transparent about those things..."

In referenced (linked) article the MHN states:
"The retreat and its location were approved just one month prior to it being held and the entire council voted for it without discussion. There were no public hearings about it before the vote."

Late criticism of spending $37,000 for weekend retreat “unfair” says Newburgh mayor - Mid Hudson News

All I could find in archived "meeting minutes". This is from March 11, 2024 (see pix).

I questioned at the council meeting about $24900 for team-building. this was even before mohonk was "revealed". there was no response. in retro, wish I'd asked if there was an RFP for the company.

Its not my monkey and not my Circus, but is this the best use of civic virtue? The cost was pretty nominal if the optics were WAY over what "the [voting] market" will or should bear. "The City of Newburgh is projecting $67.4M of revenue in FY2024, which represents a 7.5% increase over the prior year. Budgeted expenditures are projected to increase by 7.5% or $4.73M to $67.4M in FY2024."

Property owners just got a 3% water rate increase, but we can't even get garbage cans in our neighborhood. The excursion was more than a poor optic; it's contrary to the value system of a city whose median income is under $40,000.

And I agree with you. But I pay bou-coup bucks in a Bougie town for education (or under-education) of kids I never had nor want. Some don't even live here. What is your point? The poverty rate in Newburgh is a structural problem. Go after the absentee landlords.

I’m all for getting away for a retreat but are there 42 people who sit on the council or is it everyone who works at city hall because who pays for that the taxpayers because my road was suppose to be paved in 2023 and here we are 2024 and my road is still not done & im not happy about this at all I pay a lot of taxes a year and I think it’s selfish that I see certain streets paved and my street was on the list for 2023 and still not done and we are going into may I just want to know who’s paying for this?

I would think there was someplace in the CITY of Newburgh that they could do this retreat at... or the Town... and support their taxpayers!

Not to mention the mayor, from what I’ve read about him, seems to be on the defense all the time

The total amount they spent in one weekend is more than the majority of those who voted them into office make in a year...
