Kudos to NYS Attorney General for suing the owners of the Kenney Apartments for having their residents live in intolerable conditions. The city is putting a positive spin on this, which it certainly is for the residents. The suit, however, shows the city in a very poor light. Mr. Neppl mentions the “rapidly deteriorating conditions” while Mr Venning says that the A.G’s suit is more powerful than what the city could do on their own.

The AG’s suit makes it clear though that at least the conditions of inadequate heat and hot water have existed since 2023. Did the city give the
owners a rental license in 2023 and 2024? Apparently they did not issue a license in 2025. The city knew of these horrible conditions for a long time. If they also knew that the NYS Attorney General was a solution to the problem why did they wait until this year to refer this situation to her?

I think we know the answer to this. Thank you Ms. Lamb and Councilwoman Stewart for bringing this to light.
