If you have not watched the city council meeting from 4/27, I would advise you to do so. What I watched in regards to the death of Marcus Burks in police custody, was informative, and shows how much our last CM constricted information. Mr. Burks wife, a Professor of journalism at SUNY New Paltz, laid out some pretty damning facts, about the death of her son. The biggest being his death being ruled a homicide, and the city of Newburgh police, along with the NYSP are involved. Now if a death is ruled a homicide, and three people are involved, two of them are Police, and the other , unfortunately in this case is the victim. I do not know the particulars of this case, but just for this to happen in the city of Newburgh, and have one of its officers involved, in any capacity, in this "homicide" is alarming at best. The liability alone on a civil level is immense, and not to mention the criminal side of this. Newburgh may potentially be involved in a nationally viewed, civil rights violations case. With an interim city manager, inept legal department, and a political power vaccum, how will the city respond? Hopefully with care, and a good lawyer, and not with a grandstanding Mayor, spouting what he thinks is politicly correct speech for the moment. This situation has a lot of negative potential, if not handled correctly. My condolences to the family for their horrific loss, and my scrutiny for the city government, over the handling of this incident in light of these findings. I would say hopefully the city can get ahead of this, but sad to say it's too far gone for that.
