Subject: Artist of note: Born April 29, 1899 - Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington

Mr. Ellington was a man of extreme talent: Pianist, composer, orchestra leader. I realize his music is not of the sort usually mentioned here, but maybe it could be.

Rather than list all the music recorded and/or composed, here are some of his awards and accolades. Not really sure of his formal education, but he received honorary degrees from four different universities. In 1969, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is also a member of the French Legion of Honor. He appears on a U.S. commemorative stamp, and he is on the Washington D.C. quarter. In 1999 he was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize. In 1960 his star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His music wasn't always conventional, and sometimes he broke the "rules", but he was known to have said, "If it sounds good - It is good."

If I may be permitted one music link: <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHHs-CFKOQU">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHHs-CFKOQU</a>

Now that I think about it the vocalist on that one, though getting up in years, could also be an "artist of note."
