Aw, gee. It isn't that bad. Yes, the orientation is annoying and having to fill out a permit is a tiny bit of a pain. But you actually do not have to stick to the route you describe in the permit. They want the info more for a sense of how people are using the island more than anything else.

Once you get away from the crowded bits around Rock Harbor Isle Royale has a lot to offer. I do have gripes with people that visit the island and don't take good care - I'll never much care for the people taht come in big boats (boat version of car camping). I'd love to see the Rock Harbor marina stop selling gasoline for boats and, in fact, not even rent powerboat skiffs.

But in the less frequented parts of the island their is something special to be found that is I think worth the visit. If you go early or late in the season you will see few people (they only get 18,000-19,000 people per year over the 6 month season).

I was just up there last month and I'll go back next year with things to try. I will grant that one allure for me is that I can actually get there more easily than I can to a place like Pictured Rocks or even Sleeping Bear let alone a place like Agawa Canyon (which I want to go back too). I won't even bring up the Porkies...

Had I seen your note Grapenuts sooner I'd have been happy to a trip with you. Now though it is getting to be a bit late though ferries still are running.

I'll have my trip journal for this most recent trip that mixed backpacking and paddling (using a packraft) up today or tomorrow.
