Chapter 2
Nikita entered the villa and grabbed the bottle of Merlot from the counter. She rummaged through the cabinets looking for wine glasses but all she found were paper cups.
"What the hell," She laughed as she placed two cups on top of the bottle.
She grabbed her jean jacket off the couch and a blanket and headed back out to the beach towards the handsome stranger waiting for her.
As she approached him, her heart began to race. The mere sight of this gorgeous man standing with his back to her made her weak in the knees. As she silently approached, he turned and graced her with a small smile that was almost her undoing.
"Sorry about the cups, it was all I could find," she said with a shy smile, as she handed him the bottle with the cups upside down on top.
Michael's small smile grew. "Less things to wash, right?"
Nikita smiled and handed him the bottle and cups, then slipped her jacket on and began to spread out the blanket.
"I hope you don't mind, but I've been on my feet all day and thought it might be nice to sit without getting sand everywhere."
Michael nodded his head, helped her with his side of the blanket and then they both sat down. He re-opened the bottle, poured a cup and handed it to her.
"Thank you," she replied after taking the cup from his hand.
He poured himself a cup, and then set the bottle down in the sand.
"To a beautiful view and new friends." Michael said raising his cup in a toast.
Nikita, who was desperately trying not to stare at her companion, nodded and said, "Cheers".
They sat on the beach and talked for hours. Nikita told Michael a little about her childhood and running away at an early age, and Michael told her about losing his family as a teenager.
'We're both orphans,' Nikita thought and gave a sad smile.
Nikita asked Michael what line of work he was in. After a brief pause, Michael told her that he worked for the French Government in the private sector, and described himself as a ‘normal everyday Joe’. Taking a moment to reflect on his cover story while Nikita poured some more wine into their cups, he thought of the numerous times that he had wished for a normal life during the many years he had already spent in Section, but on this night the desire to just be ‘normal’ was overwhelming. The more he listened to this gorgeous woman talk, the more he wished the night wouldn't end.
Michael, being the superb operative that he is, had laid out a cover for his new friend, and she seemed intrigued and inquisitive, and would interject with many questions every time he stopped speaking. Her curiosity and naivety made him smile yet worry. 'Where could this possibly lead?' he wondered. ‘Would this become yet another brief glimmer in his life? Burning ever so brightly for such a short time, then fading away as quickly as it came?’
Losing Simone had devastated him. They had both known the consequences of marrying inside Section. Madeline had increased both of their mission frequencies and they had spent more time apart than together. The time they had spend together, as short lived as it was, had been fierce and passionate. Michael had loved Simone with an intensity he hadn’t know existed. When she had died, the pain in his heart had been almost too much to bear and he thought he would be alone, lost and alone, forever. But sitting here with this woman, he felt the hardened shell around his heart begin to crack. He felt a glimmer of hope where before he only felt despair. Whatever happened once this night was over, he would never forget this woman named Nikita, who breathed life back into his dying soul.
