Chapter 4
A little before noon, Michael arrived at the villa where Nikita was staying. For the first time in a long time, Michael felt anxious. Sleep hadn’t come easy for him after leaving Nikita on the beach. His mind had replayed their conversations over and over again. Giving up after only a couple of hours of sleep, Michael showered and dressed and then checked in with Section. He was due back in 4 more days, but Madeline had required him to periodically check in.
After a short tete-a-tete with Madeline, Michael instinctively reached for his glock, then thought better of it and placed it back in a drawer. With a small grin, he left his room at the modest boarding house he was staying at and deciding to leave Section behind as well, went for a walk along the beach. Michael needed to collect his thoughts before seeing Nikita again today. He knew in his heart that they could never have more than the next few days together, and found the prospect of never seeing her again unsettling. After walking for an hour or so, he changed his direction and made his way to Nikita.
Walking up to the door of the villa, and seeing it was ajar, Michael’s reflexes kicked in. He slipped inside and scanned the area looking for clues of a forced entry. Checking all the rooms and finding no sign of Nikita, he quickly but stealthily made his way to the stairs leading to the second floor silently cursing his decision to leave his glock behind.
When he reached the second floor landing, he found that the second floor was a loft, and immediately focused on the bed in the center of the room. Breathing a sigh of relief, he saw Nikita laying in the center of the bed. He sauntered over to the bed and took a minute to gaze at her as she slept.
‘So beautiful’ he thought. ‘And carefree’ a voice in his head added.
He was both relieved and frightened as he realized when he left her early in the morning, she must not have closed the door tightly. His mind rationalized that she was naive and trusting, and probably didn’t give it much thought. After all he had seen and endured during his tenure with Section, he wished to be that naive and trusting again with all his heart. But his mind knew better. It was careless of her, and if Michael knew anything, he knew that carelessness led to death.
He reached out and gently stroked her cheek as he softly spoke her name, “Nikita”.
Her cheek rubbed against his hand and she purred as his hand softly caressed her face.
“Nikita.” he quietly said.
Nikita’s eyes came open and when she realized someone was sitting on her bed and she was not dreaming. She sat up straight, quickly pulled the sheet up to cover herself and said, “Michael! W-What are you doing here?”
Michael smiled at her, “It’s noon. We were to have lunch, yes?” he asked as he raised an eyebrow.
“Noon!!” She said loudly. “Oh my god, Michael I overslept. I’m so sorry.”
She pushed the sheet back, rose from the bed, went right for the closet and started going through clothes.
“I’ll just have a quick shower and be ready in a few minutes.” She said with her back to him.
Michael was admiring the view she provided him with, for her satin night gown dipped seductively low on her back. He swallowed and had to look away from her to collect himself.
“I’ll be downstairs” he said as he slowly rose from the edge of the bed.
He moved to the landing at the same time she did and they collided. He grasped her arms and pulled her close to him to keep her from falling down the stairs. Breathless, she looked into his eyes and said, “Thank you.”
Michael calmly replied, “You’re welcome.”
They both stood there staring into the other’s eyes for what seemed to be an eternity. Nikita was mesmerized by how deep an emerald his eyes were, and Michael was lost in an ocean of blue.
“After you” Michael finally said in a sensuous voice.
“What?” Nikita asked a little confused.
Stepping back, Michael released her arms and motioned for the stairs.
“Oh” Nikita replied as her cheeks flushed pink, and turned to walk down the steps.
Once on the main floor Nikita made her escape without breaking stride, and headed straight for the bathroom. Once inside she quickly closed the door and leaned up against it as she let out a huge sigh. Last night on the beach she had thought his eyes were green, but she never imagined them to be as dazzling as they were. She pushed off the door, removed her night gown, tossed it aside and quickly stepped into the shower.
Michael had taken up residence in front of the sliding glass doors facing the sea. He was trying to rid his mind of the vision of her laying in her bed. He wished he were a different person for an instant when he sat down next to her as she slept. He wished to be the kind of person who could throw caution to the wind. His body had reacted instantly when he saw her laying there, and he was puzzled at his lack of self control.
'Four days. he sadly thought.
If this was all they would have, Michael vowed to make every minute of the next four days as mutually memorable as possible. Nikita may have a lifetime of memorable moments ahead of her, but Michael knew that his life belonged to Section and that this is all he might have. While formulating a plan in his mind, Michael stood stoically by the glass doors, and waited for Nikita to get ready.
