Arrrrr!! Proud to see my local Long Island Newsday paper reveal Robert Newton as the No. 1 pop-culture pirate as "Long John Silver." They claim he has "everything" you could want, a "pirate's pirate," blowing away all others before him, and rightly so. I remember going to a pub back in the 70's named "Long John Silver's." They mentioned the fast-food chain named after him, but not the pub. Some actors will never be forgotten. Robert Newton is one of them.

Wow! That's terrific news to hear. Do you know if there is any information about this online? If so, could you post the link? Thanks so much!

Your friend,
Trisha :-)

With a little help from Google, I found the article.
Nice to see Robert Newton still considered the top
movie pirate.

Thanks, Chuck, for the link. By the way, Susan, I did vote for LJS in the available poll. He's got a long way to go to catch Captain Jack. Maybe more will be voting for LJS soon!

Your friend,
Trisha :-)

Hey, there's a poll to go with article--who's your favorite pirate? So far, Jack Sparrow is winning, with Long John coming in third after Captain Hook. (Captain Hook????) Robert Newton fans, get out the vote!!!

Great, Trisha, I'm glad to see LJS is catching up! I know there's no way he's going to catch up to Jack Sparrow with all the POTC hype, but he could at least come in a respectable second! (How could anybody prefer Captain Hook to Long John Silver? They've gotta be people who've never seen Treasure Island. And those other two choices were just ridiculous--Painty the Pirate Painting and Jean LaFoote from the Captain Crunch commercials? What the ...?!)

Alas, Newsday has taken down the article, along with the poll ... but last time I checked, Captain Hook hadn't gotten any new votes, while Long John had gotten up to almost 20 percent of the vote, leaving Jack Sparrow with only about 70!

Actually, I should have put a happy face next to that last posting ... While the article is gone and the poll has ended :-(, LJS moved up to second place :-). (We need a "comedy/tragedy" icon! An' if I were cap'n o' Voy forums, we'd 'ave one, by thunder! Arr!)

here's another artical that mentions Robert but it's more about "Pirates" with Johnny Depp

"'Newton's performance is probably the closest antecedent to Jack Sparrow because he's colorful, unpredictable, roguish and scurrilous but somehow likable,' Maltin said."

Hooray for Leonard Maltin! :-)
