I watched The Beachcomber this morning, about 2:00 this morning. I'll have to watch it again today, I don't have anything going on for Labor Day and it's raining out so, I guess I know what I'll be doing.

I watched the Beachcomber this weekend and I didn't see any arm whacks. I thought maybe he would give one to Donald Sinden but it wasn't to be. I guess it wouldn't have been 'proper' to whack Glynis Johns because she would have fainted, at least until she because smitten with him.

'Hmm, here's a theory that could warrant more study (maybe one of us could use it for their doctoral thesis ;-)): Could it be that when he's playing a villain, he's more apt to use the elbow jab, and when he's playing a nice guy, he's more apt to use the arm whack?'

Susan, I would say that the 'whack' was more of a friendly gesture and that he would use it when he was playing a nice part. The elbow jab 'could' be more severe, depending on how hard it was done. So, yes, I would say that he probably would be more likely to use it as a villan. As Bill Sykes, he certainly was not being 'friendly'.
