After six months of polling, the votes were equally split as to whether people prefer this forum or the new, more fully featured one. Therefore, in hopes of enticing more people to participate in the discussion, I've decided to switch over to the new one, at least for a while, to see whether we like it. (All the links on the site now lead to the new forum.) Please feel free to carry any discussions from this board over onto that one by cutting and pasting relevant passages into the appropriate topic (or creating a new one if it doesn't exist already--but check first to see that it doesn't exist) or just summarizing what we were talking about when we left off.
Just a few of the nifty new features of the new board are as follows:
* No need to request a password from me; you can create and manage your own user account (which gives you automatic access to all Runboard forums, not just the Robert Newton one, and there are plenty of other subjects there to choose from)
* You can create a profile to let people know a little bit about you when they click on your username
* You can upload an avatar. In case you're not familiar with them, an avatar is a little picture you choose to identify you to other users (e.g., pick your favorite Robert Newton photo--but make sure it's no larger than 60x60 pixels; sorry that's Runboard's rules, not mine)
* If you realize you've made a mistake after posting, you can go back and edit your post
* You can use italics, bold, etc. to format your text and spice it up with smileys
* In addition to creating discussion topics, you can also create polls
* Topics are organized by general theme, which should make them easier to find (and result in less duplication, I hope!)
* Important topics can be made "sticky" (by the moderator) so that they remain at the top, even though other topics rotate position (like they do here), with the most recent at the top
* You can subscribe to the topics you're interested in and/or check the box to receive e-mail notifications when your posting has been replied to
* Registered users can send and receive private messages (keeping your e-mail address private)
* You can see at a glance when the last post was made to each general heading and by whom
* The new board has an easier-to-remember address: brobertnewton.runboard.com
There are probably lots of other neat features I've forgotten, so go try it out for yourself and let us know what you think (under "Feedback" in the "Administration" forum)! Thanks!!!
