A case-report of central nervous system involvement by hepatitis C

S. Younes S. Chebel S. Boukhris M. Frith-Ayeb [1]

[1] Hospital of Monastir, Tunisia.

This is a case -report of a 31-year-old woman with brain-stem lesions and positive serological tests for hepatitis C. She deteriorated progressively and inexorably and died a neurological death. No post-mortem examination was performed.

Neurological disorders in patients with hepatitis C manifest mainly as peripheral neuropathies. Central nervous system involvement has been reported only very rarely. Postulated mechanisms include ischaemic or haemorrhagic lesions with a potential pathogenic role for cryoglobulins and antiphospholipid antibodies.
