I certainly hope that the author of the first link got permission from Moneyhon and Roberts to remove all the photos from their excellent volume of Portraits of Conflicts, A Photographic History of the Civil War in Mississippi. I suppose they could have dug them all up separately but I could find no acknowledgment.

Ours is the 3rd Mo Cav Battalion, not the 3rd Cavalry Regt. The Battalion fought at Iuka and Corinth and only one company was retained with Price as near as we can tell, and that company does not show up on any OOB (no CS provost company ever did, unlike the US Army). That is why it was so dang hard to track anything down. They were dismounted in the Spring of 62 after Pea Ridge when moved across the River (as were many regts) and of course were not happy being without horses - and the company with Price was likely happy but the Battalion was not happy losing them to Price's HQ. We have seen letters by Major D. Todd Samuel and others regarding this situation, but have found precious little else from members of the unit.

From Crute's Units of the Confederate States Army:

3rd Cavalry Battalion was formed in early 1862 with about 400 officers and men. Ordered east of the Mississippi River, the unit was dismounted. It took an active part in the conflict of Iuka and Corinth. The unit lost more than 25% of the of the 388 engaged at Corinth (includes our company but we do not know casualty info).

I will see if I can dredge up the e-mails that found out about the HQ company. If anybody else would like to dive in and find more info, I am sure Danny and Company would appreciate it!
