Actually Silas you are mistaken on this one. The paragraphs that you referenced apply to compliments paid by the guard while on duty at the guardhouse, (ie. Turning out the Guard), and the generals personal guard while on duty at headquarters. Mark Terry was essentially correct in stating how to salute officers while on sentry duty. HOWEVER, Dal Bello states in paragraph 100 as follows, "Again, sentinels Present Arms to all Field Officers, (majors and above), the Battalion Commander and the Officer of the Day. For Line Officers,(Captains and below),they come to Attention, and Shoulder Arms. NO COURTESIES ARE GIVEN WHEN SENTINELS ARE TO CHALLENGE." So, beings that the sentries were ordered to Challenge all persons at the time said incident happened, it would seem that Tom and the other boys on duty acted correctly in not paying honors to the good Colonel and giving him hell for not correctly giving the countersign.
Good work boys.

Charles
