Subject: Why a "Death March"
In reply to: PigPen 's message, "Re: Why" on 10/26/04 8:27:47pm

The "Death March" comment is not surprising. Why do we see older people with valid reasons to complain about physical hardship acting like they're ready for more, while some of the young bucks in good health and reasonable physical condition pass out or bitch about how hard it is?

It's because lots of young people in particular haven't ever done anything physically challenging before. Without the benefit of that experience they lack the crucial reference required to tell them just how far they can go without failing. The harder the experiences the higher the reference becomes. When it's pretty high events like the Mansfield march feel like a day off from work.

I'm a big advocate of exposing all youth to physical deprivation such as found in the military (sorry Air Force type - I mean the real military), experiential education programs like Outward Bound, etc. Some sports can qualify, although nowadays all too often practice is ended before the real learning takes place. It doesn't or shouldn't be sadistic in nature, just challenging. Afterwards they're amazed at what they did, and it generally changes their outlook on like, becoming just like Pig Pen...

After further thought ....
