I'm only going to chime in here on the jackets at present. I really think that undyed cotton jean "penitentiary" jackets are the way to go.

We have those listed separately but they are one in the same. Every surviving original and all the images I've seen of jackets of this sort have a 9 button front. Beyond that there are subtle differences like exterior pocket (or lack thereof) and epaulets (or lack thereof).

The Houston Depot sack is a very sketchy item. It's thought to have existed but no original remains and there aren't any images (that I'm aware of) that support this either. I'm not saying they didn't exist but I would not at all recommend having them on the list. Moore's thesis documents large amounts of cotton jean going out to units, one of the recipients being the 2nd Texas of which documentation from men on both sides supports white/undyed uniforms at Shiloh. By Corinth I think they would have been well-travled and the color would show that accordingly. I'd put civilian style garments and then commutation jackets as very, very distant optional choices.

I'm serious on the button count. Research I've done in the last few months shows that these babies had 9 button fronts. I know in the past many of us (myself included) made jackets with fewer but the evidence seems to have outdated that. There were variations, as noted above, but the button count seems to be a very consistent thing. Most had high collars too and many had either epualets or slash pockets.

My two cents.

Fred
