There apparently was a problem with at least some of the shoes in terms of durability and the terrible weather and hard marching did not help...at Nashville the uniforms were probably still in tolerable condition but shoes were worn out and the troops were almost freezing due to lack of overcoats and tents. They were scraping holes in the ground and lining them with sticks and straw to try to keep warm.

Actually, now you know one of the reasons the event was moved to the beginning of October. In 1989 at the 125th some poor guy had a heart attack and they found his frozen body the next morning...
