I have driven highway 71 from northwest Arkansas to Shreveport and it is a slow two lane road. Lots of traffic.
You might make better time hitting I-35 south to Dallas and then getting on I-20 to Shreveport. I don't know if the distance is shorter or longer than going through KC, but if you time it so you go through Dallas before or after rush hour, it should be an easier drive, especially returning when you are tired. Those winding roads through Arkansas and Missouri can wear on a fellow.
