Men,
Lets be period correct here. We should make smudge pots to repel the gallinippers. They can be made quite simply in the field. Add fresh green pine boughs to a smouldering fire. The smoke will cover you and your messmates. Your eyes will sting and burn, your face will turn a deep black as the resin from the boughs leaks out. You and all your equipment will smell like a smokehouse. BUT,.......you will be period correct now if the mosquitoes do bite you thats enough story. Thank goodness they dont cause diseases like malaria or yellow fever. Remind the Captain not to camp near a swamp so those vapors from the swamp dont give us the above diseases.
As far as swallowing matches heads your good NCO's forgot one other ban, dont consume corn squeezins while consuming match heads, or prehaps a certain part of your body may assume the look like someone opened the manhole to hell.
