I have also confirmed the above with Chris Daley on federal sizes. Am working on some documentation for both the Richmond Depot and Columbus and other western depots as well.

Besides all the other excellent reasons sited above by KC, there is the fact that since an average regiment of average sized 19th century soldiers would have very few rank and file in private purchase garments, it would be incongruous to pretend to emulate that company with an average sized set of 21st century soldiers. The pct of men in private purchase garments would be much higher today if we stick with the limitations of 1860's sizes. Ergo, we won't look like them at all. I agree with many of those most authentic in the hobby today who are appealing for more, not less uniformity, except where documentation tells us they were motley.
