I agree with the above statements that timing is everything. My high school band came to a point when we had to cut one of our pieces and it was really embarassing that we couldn't perform a piece because we weren't prepared enough.

As much as time management is critical, I believe that sometimes things just do not go according to plan. As teachers, we need to be flexible with adversity and have a backup procedure in place. I would recommend watering down parts as needed and not excluding pieces unless absolutely necessary. Perhaps meeting earlier on the night of the performance would also help improve security. It is not something we want to do, but it is a reasonable alternative to either playing something terrible "as is" or playing something decent watered down or taken at a slower tempo.
