One other option that exists: give out private lessons. If health becomes too much of an issue for the public life, or the stress of dealing with an entire ensemble is too overwhelming, step down and give private lessons. Chances are that only the students who really care about thier craft will want lessons, ensuring that they will make themselves a pleasure to work with.

To me, teaching is like learning... you can never truly stop. It does not matter if you are teaching in a public school, or if you are a retired 500 year old... people can still learn something from you.
