Yes, I believe keyboarding skills should be taught in grade school, possibly around 4th grade. It would be a difficult teaching technique to start because we are not used to being taught the keyboard in school, but if all schools started doing this i think it would make learning music much easier for the students who wish to go on with music. Look at it this way; in grade school we have gym class, in which we learn the basics of basketball, football, and other various activities which not all of us end up using. So what is wrong with teaching kids how to play the keyboard? Some students will take it to heart and use it for the rest of their lives, just like the professional football players use that first gym class.

I really think that is a valid point, but to go along with that idea general music is a required course in elementary/middle school. Should keyboarding be taught in general music, or should it be a separate course?

I think that keyboarding should be taught, however, going off Ashley's gym example...keyboarding would be an invalid topic. Students in gym class who have no enthusiasm for it will never retain or practice the sport of football or basketball...

The same goes with music... those with no enthusiasm will not practice their songs or take to the time to realize what it really is. They will just be there and leave.

In this case, I think that we need to look at which is more important... learning how to play a keyboard instrument, or just getting students acquainted with the idea of using their voice. I think that it would be a wise investment to learn earlier in a students career, however, I do not think that many students would take it. It might just be better to offer it as an extra activity.
