Steve Blair phoned me today to tell me about the Spanish Police being heavy with the Cannon Ball run competitors. He has advised us not to run with rally plate on the cars.

Here is is the latest posting from the Cannonball web site

12.00pm (SPA) - Spanish Police impound over 75% of the cars making their way to Benidorm and hold them pretty much all day. This appears to have been caused by the actions of three front runners - the rest of the cars find alternative routes to reach their destination, ready for the track day tommorrow.

23.00pm (SPA) - Cars start to trickle into Benidorm after paying hefty fines to be released by Spanish Police - dispite the intense driving, lack of sleep and hassle along the way, Cannonballers arrive demonstrating true
spirit. It takes a different breed.

You have been warned !!!

Yes, we are waiting for you all?

Just keep to within the speed limit, give or take a bit and we should be fine, or is that fined?

The Cannon Ball run is all about how fast you can go all the time, not giving any thought for any other road users.

Reminds me slightly of the stage to the Nuremburg Ring on the last rally. We spent most of the time on the wrong side of the road, anyone remember, go karts then the ring, but the go kart que got longer and longer and it ate all the time away. We left the gokarts with only a few minuetes before we should have got to the next control at the ring, but still arrived within the time window. The only time my navigator confessed she was scared.

You wont have that problem as you are all going to behave yourselves and drive sensibly, well within the speed limits and looking like regular tourists. You wont have the option of displaying your rally plates as they will be handed out in Tangier. So no problems there then!

Seriously, one well known Rally Organiser (not Peter Davis!) has been banned from running in Spain for 2 years, so let's play it safe please.

If you are delayed for any reason (including police) even if you are a day late, keep going don't turn back. If you miss the Start in Tangier make for the second overnight stop in Fes.

Final Instructions will be going out this week. Included will be the contact details of all the overnight hotels.

I hope your final preparations are going well, not long now.

Peter

Ex 3 Liege rally entrant, may be available for a last minute stand in for the Atlas Sahara.

I have been on the Targa Liege, Corsica and Florence rallies in my own kit car, so I know what's involved. Keen to be considered as a possible late substitute if your co-driver drops out.

Will not know availability until the end of September, due to business commitments.

Expect to participate in 50% of driving, navigating and servicing/repairs (ex aerospace apprentice, and 3 time kit car builder). Don't mind late nights, hardship or getting dirty (in an automotive way!)

Contact details:-

Give me a tinkle or email, if you think you may be interested.

Cheers all, Spike
