Subject: How to find width of Segment and its area of segment?

Hello All,

Just want to check if I am on the right track.

To find the width of the segment, For example

Distance from the left bank:
1.80 2.75

To find the above segment, 2.275 - 1.5 = 0.775m

Am I right?

To find the area of the segment mentioned above,
width of segment x depth
i.e 0.7751 x 1.59 = 1.23225

However, I cannot understand why we have to multiply the width of segment and the depth. I tried drawing the segments on cross section but they appear to be in trapezium in shape rather than rectangle in shape.

I did ask Dr Chatterjea during the tutorial class. She said that if we divide the segments small enough, the segments will appear to be in rectangle in shape.

But then again, if I draw the segments small enough to make them looks like rectangle. There will be lots of segments. This will mean that we need to find more than 8 segment areas and widths.

My question is
Am I on the right track in solving the tutorial question ?
If I am right, then why we have to multiply the segment width and depth to find the rectangular shape of segment which to me, it looked like a trapezium on the diagram.

Thank you.

From Eileen
