In reply to: Dr. Chatterjea 's message, "(XSS229/3A)/Plate Tectonics" on 08:00:19 07/16/99 Fri

Topic : Convergent Plates
When Oceanic plates and Oceanic plates collide, why does one subduct another(my students used to ask me this!)?
Does it mean that there is one oceanic plate which is mode dense this subducts the less dense?

Also I am confused with the terms:
OCeanic Plate vs Oceanic Crust
and similarly
Continental Plate vs Continental Crust

This is wrt to the diagram on 16(Plate Tectonic Theory)
