I have already been teaching this to my students that no weathering process is exclusive of water; especially when it comes to exfoliation. I know the textbooks(not sure of the newer versions-but Understanding Geog still outdated) depict this process as heating and expansion and purely by physical agents...I keep telling my students that they just "need to know" thay there is a new theory/belief that studies have been done to show that exfoliation(and other desert weathering processes for that matter) is more a chemical Weathering process than a physical weathering process. But they get confused since the textbooks still reflect the "old" understanding.
I wonder how other teachers get around this?
Maybe we should just publish something in Geonews and tell them to change their concept/teaching totally and not latch on to the "old" way. Just like we can now safely throw out the "Davisian" cycle of erosion.
