Was doing research on the "True Food Guide" for our scm newsletter and guess what I have found on our own Health Promotion Board website. I always have this tinkling feeling that our dear health board is overly promoting the conventional food pryamid which has been debunked by many health nutritionists & phsyicians...and that not much truth have been given to Singaporean shoppers on the food that we find in our supermarket.
A diligent search on their website...I found their stand on organic food, no info can be found on GE food!.
Singapore Health Promotion Board is a statutory board, their missions are:
- To empower Singaporeans to achieve optimal health throughout life.
- To ensure accessibility to health information and preventive health services.

Organic Food Craze
Today, when you visit supermarkets and health food stores, you see more and more of organic food products. You may have heard that organic foods are healthier alternatives, so is this true?
Organic foods refer to products grown or produced without the use of man-made fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators or livestock feed additives. Despite various claims made by food producers, foods grown organically are no better or worse to our health as compared to conventionally grown products. The term ‘organic’ describes a method of production rather than the characteristic of the food. Plants absorb the necessary nutrients for growth, and if the nutrient is missing, the plant will not grow. Hence, organically grown products offers no nutritional advantages over non-organically grown products. Organic foods are also limited in terms of variety and are more expensive.
If you 'go organic' because you are worried about the safety issue of food, fear not. The Agri-food Veterinary Authority (AVA) conducts inspections to ensure that both imported and locally produced fruit and vegetables are safe for consumption.
Thus, we don’t necessarily need to eat organic foods to have a healthy diet. A healthy diet is a varied and balanced diet, whereby foods are eaten in appropriate amounts. Consumers should use the Healthy Diet Pyramid as a guide in planning a diet that is beneficial for health.
