While there may be political/exconomic motivations behind this Sing Health's rather skewed view, what I find sadder, is that our young generation does not seem to have any idea abt the 'other view'. It's one thing to reach one's conclusion after understanding both sides of the story; it's anor when one blindly follows the mainstream opinion. I don't necessarily expect all the students to agree on the benefits/ disbenefits of conventiona;/ organic farming, but there shld have been at least some attempt to balance the research, if least, for the sake of gaining better grades ?

I recently had an interesting conversation with this guy who was doing env law, and he said that the law is perversely skewed n liberty, such that it's only if one can show that harm is caused by an action eg GM Food, that the law wld prevent the co fr so doing. In the absence of concrete scientific proof - it's hard to show the relation bet cancer and conventional fd since we are exposed to pollution for eg, and it's diff to trace the link. To that extent, we can't prevent the spread of GM food.

But I'll agree that limitation in variety is a qns of supply and demand - it's not that organic farming cannot provide variety - nature celebrates biodiversity . In fact, docs show that wide varities of barley, wheat, potatoes you name it has been depleting since aft WWII. Personally, it was only when I went to Little India that I found varieties of veg like you'll never find in NTUC e g green carrot. It's econmics, not nature that limits variety. Conventional farming promotes monoculture for efficiency. What we view as 'ltd variety' of organic veg is not true - what is md avail in Cold storage organic section is ltd coz there's relatively little demand still, but if you cld recall the stay at Greencircle, the variety of veg avail on famr can be tremeduous. On the other hand, it's due also to our ltd awareness that our 'demand' for veg is only for that few type eg kai lan, cabbage etc.
