Subject: URGENT!!! Federal Marriage Amendment

Dear Friends,

Early in February, Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family told listeners that he had met with the House and Senate leadership in Washington. Dr. Dobson was told that the leadership would not move on a Federal Marriage Amendment unless there was a huge public demand. On April 5, Dr. Dobson told his listeners that the message doesn�t seem to be getting through to Congress and renewed the call.

I urge you to communicate with your senators and representatives and let them know your views on this issue. Even if you�ve already called, emailed, or written them on this subject before, please do so again now and continue, daily, for the next several weeks.

There are two proposed marriage amendments. The Federal Marriage Amendment introduced by Marilyn Musgrave (R-Co.) says:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

Congresswoman Musgrave says that legislatively created civil unions would be permitted if her amendment passes Congress and is ratified by the states.

Another amendment, the Institution of Marriage Amendment, says:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither the United States nor any State shall recognize or grant to any unmarried person the legal rights or status of a spouse.

The Federal Marriage Amendment protects the �word� marriage and the Institution of Marriage Amendment protects the �institution� of marriage. It is our understanding that legislatively created civil unions would not be lawful under the Institution of Marriage Amendment. Of the 100 Senators,
15 were for the FMA
21 were on the fence
42 were against the FMA
