ACT 3

EXT : The Compound

Spike and Tap walk along through the compound.

TAP
Should be sunrise soon.

SPIKE
No, it won’t be.

TAP
How do you know that?

SPIKE
Can sense it.

TAP
You’ve learnt to sense sunrise?

SPIKE
Could say that.

TAP
How?

SPIKE
Used to be a vampire.

TAP
What?

SPIKE
You know kid, really can’t stand people who say that when they know fine well what I just said.

TAP
Sorry, it’s just…. I didn’t realise that there was a cure.

Spike laughs.

TAP
What?

SPIKE
There’s no cure. I earned it.

TAP
How?

SPIKE
Not one for sharing life stories.

TAP
You tell me your story, I’ll tell you mine.

SPIKE
And what makes you think I care?

TAP
Because you need to justify this to yourself.

SPIKE
Justify what?

TAP
Helping me. I know you don’t really want to help us. We’re killers. I get that, I don’t wear beer goggles – I can see what I am pretty damn clearly, but I know how I got this way, I know I’m worth saving, you don’t have that same clarity about me, and deep down I think you have a need to have it.

SPIKE
An insightful little bugger aren’t you?

TAP
You don’t take a human life to it’s outer limits without learning a little about it. I imagine what with you being an ex-vampire, you would know that.

Spike laughs a little.

SPIKE
You want my life story?

CUT TO:

INT: Cave

Faith sits on rock sharpening a stake. Dory approaches.

DORY
We just gonna sit tight?

FAITH
Yeah.

DORY
OK.

He hangs around. Faith looks at him.

FAITH
What?

DORY
Your not helping us are you?

FAITH
What?

DORY
You’re not helping us. You’re helping your boyfriend.

FAITH
(almost offended) He is not my boyfriend.

DORY
Sorry. I just figured…

FAITH
Well you figured wrong. (beat) So anyway, how you know about vamps?

DORY
Few years back I was hired to kill two guys.

FAITH
Big surprise. They vampires?

DORY
Precisely. Got into perfect position, two bullets and hit them both right between the eyes. They went down and seconds later they were back up, in game face. All the bullets did was screw them up a little. I pretty much guessed what they were straight off.

FAITH
Let me guess, you went off and read up.

DORY
Pretty much.

FAITH
You take them out eventually?

DORY
Sure did.

FAITH
How?

DORY
Wooden bullets, soaked in holy water.

FAITH
Nice. Got any with?

DORY
‘Fraid not. Henning said no guns. Guess they’re too clean for him.

FAITH
Figures. This Henning dude sounds wicked psycho.

DORY
Guess so. You learn not to question it, you know?

FAITH
A little, yeah.

A girl runs through.

GIRL
We got incoming. Five vamps, movin’ fast through the overgrowth.

FAITH
Show time I guess.

CUT TO:

INT: The Compound

Spike and Tap walk on.

SPIKE
And now I’m on a mission of redemption around the country.

TAP
But you already got this Shanshu thing didn’t you? That is your redemption.

SPIKE
No, it’s not. Way I got it figured is that this is a brief reprieve – ‘less I do what I can now, I go straight back to hell.

TAP
Why you think that?

SPIKE
There’s a reason I still have my powers. (beat) There must be.

He goes quiet for a moment.

SPIKE
Ok then, story for a story.

TAP
Ok. I guess it starts with my Uncle.

SPIKE
Why’s that?

TAP
He was a major gang leader in New York.

SPIKE
Was?

TAP
He’s dead.

SPIKE
Sorry.

TAP
I’m not, I was the one that killed him.

SPIKE
Oh. Why?

TAP
He was raping my mother. Anyway, that’s not the story. My father died when I was three years old, three guesses who killed him. After that my Uncle took me in, raised me in his image. I got my first kill at seven years old. My uncle put a gun in my hand, held me up and I pulled the trigger on some poor bastard.

SPIKE
Seven?

TAP
Yeah, seven. And you know what? I truly can’t describe how great it felt. Can you imagine what it’s like to be seven years old and feel that kind of power. It was exhilarating. Especially for me, I was raised without the notion of right or wrong, hell, I was raised as a submissive to him, so when he gave me the opportunity to get some power I jumped at it. Being a killer became second nature to me, that's what I did for a long time, might as well get paid for it.

SPIKE
And then you found out about your mother.

TAP
Yeah, and you know what the worst part was?

SPIKE
It turned out your uncle was actually your father.

TAP
Yeah, quite frankly it’s a miracle I don’t have a third eye. I went mental , I brutally beat him to death – I realised then that I better get the hell out of dodge. (beat) And then I heard about this. 30 people, 10 mil for the sole survivor. I can get pretty damned far with 10 mil.

SPIKE
That’s why you’re here? So you don’t need to kill again?

TAP
That’s why I’m here. Make you feel better about all this?

SPIKE
We’ll see.

They take a few steps forward.

TAP
We’re here.

SPIKE
How many guards?

TAP
Two at the gate, the walls are high so there’s no threat of climbing in so they aren’t covered.

SPIKE
The guards are human?

TAP
Yeah. They are.

SPIKE
Stay here.

Spike walks straight out into the opening in front of the guards.

SPIKE
Hey, boneheads.

They turn.

SPIKE
Yeah, you, with the big machine gun. Come here if you think your hard enough.

One of the guards walks towards him pointing the gun. With superhuman speed Spike grabs the gun and smashes him in the face with it. He grabs the gun out of his hand and throws it to the ground and quickly pulls a revolver out of the guards holster and shoots the gun out of the other guards hand. He turns to the first and hits him hard in the face knocking him out cold. He then pulls a knife out of his pocket and speeds over to the other guard and holds it to his throat.

SPIKE
Take me to your boss and you’ll live. OK?

GUARD
OK.

SPIKE
Good. Tap c’mon. Grab that gun.

TAP
No problem.

SPIKE
And kid?

TAP
Yeah?

SPIKE
Try anything and I’ll snap your neck before the bullet leaves the chamber.

TAP
I won’t.

SPIKE
Good, let’s go.

The three of them walk into mission control.

END OF ACT 3

ACT 4

EXT : The Cave

The girl leads Faith and Dory to the roof of the cave and hands Faith a pair of binoculars.

GIRL
(pointing) Over there.

Faith looks and we see what she sees – 5 vamps on an ATV heading straight for them.

FAITH
Oh bollocks. (to Dory) Get everyone armed and ready.

DORY
Why? What are you going to do?

FAITH
I’m gonna go meet them, Don’t worry, it’s unlikely they’ll get anywhere near here, I’ve got it covered.

CUT TO:
INT : Mission Control

Spike, Tap and the guard walk into the main control room. There are monitors all around showing every area of the compound.

SPIKE
Everyone stop what you’re doing and pay attention.

The twenty or so people in the room turn to face him.

SPIKE
You all act sensibly and no-one’ll get hurt.

A man in a suit steps forward and raises a gun. He shoots Spike’s hostage in the head and the man slumps to the floor.

SPIKE
Bugger.

Spike and Tap are grabbed by the guards.

MAN IN SUIT
Get rid of them.

SPIKE
Can’t let that happen mate.

MAN IN SUIT
You don’t have a say in it blondie.

SPIKE
Oh please. That was your threatening insult? Twat.

The Man pulls out his gun again and aims at Spike’s head. A man sitting behind a table speaks.

MAN
Now, now Eric, don’t be hasty. Put the gun down.

He turns to Tap.

MAN
Now son, you knew what would happen if you came anywhere near here. And you should have told your friend too.

SPIKE
He did, but I didn’t really care. I assume you’re Henning.

HENNING
You assume right.

SPIKE
OK then. Well maybe you could get your stiff to let the hell go of me and you and me could have a conversation. Man to man.

HENNING
And what makes you think that a man of my distinction would want to have a conversation with you William. (off Spike’s look) Oh yes, I know all about you. The whole story right up to present day. Travelling around the country on a motorcycle in an attempt to right past wrongs alongside a faithful companion, pun intended. How clichéd.

SPIKE
Maybe so but I’m about to cliché your arse.

TAP
Dude, what do you even mean by that?

SPIKE
(with bravado) I don’t know.

HENNING
Ah look. The shows about to begin. I’m sure I could let you stay for this.

SPIKE
Show? What show?

Henning indicates a monitor – it shows Faith surrounded by five vamps.

SPIKE
She can handle herself.

HENNING
Perhaps, but these aren’t your normal vampires. They’ve been genetically engineered to be a helluva lot more dangerous, a helluva lot more vicious and much better fighters. This should be good.

Spike turns to watch the monitor, a much more worried look on his face.

SPIKE
You let them in. That was the point of the game.

HENNING
Precisely.

We see the monitor again, the first vamp charges Faith and she……

CUT TO:
EXT: The Compound

…. sidesteps it and it crashes into a tree. A second vamp approaches her and she kicks it hard in the face – to pretty much no effect. She follows up with a punch and the vamp goes down, but unconvincingly. The third dives at her and knocks her off of her feet. All of the others dive onto the top of her. She struggles against them from her position on the ground.

CUT TO:
INT: Mission Control

Spike dives over to Henning and grabs him by the throat.

SPIKE
They answer to you?

HENNING
They do.

Eric cocks his gun to Spike’s head.

ERIC
Put him down.

TAP
He won’t be doing that.

Eric looks round and sees Tap pointing a gun at him.

SPIKE
(to Henning) Call them off.

HENNING
No.

SPIKE
Ok then, call them off or I’ll snap your neck.

Henning motions down with his eyes.

HENNING
Empty threat son, empty threat.

Spike looks down to see Henning sitting in a wheelchair. Eric cocks his gun.

ERIC
Goodbye Willy.

We hear a gun shot and Eric drops to the ground. Tap clicks the safety back onto his gun and throws it to Spike who holds it to Henning’s head.

HENNING
You’re not a killer anymore.

SPIKE
It really depends on the situation. You cause someone I care about to die and then you’re on a very slippery slope.

HENNING
She’s not dead.

Spike turns back to the monitor.

CUT TO:
EXT: The Compound

Faith stakes one of the vamps. There are only two left. One swings a hard fist at her but she ducks the blow and grabs it’s arm swinging it into a tree and dusting it on a protruding branch. The final vamp stands staring at her from a few feet away.

FAITH
Do you know who I am little boy? Did you see what I did to your friends? Cos, that comes pretty easy to me. You see I’m a vampire slayer. I kill vampires – and seeing as you’re the son of a bitch that gave me a black eye I’m gonna slay you twice as hard.

The vampire runs at her but she drops down and flips it over. It lands with its head hitting a rock. Faith repeatedly smashes its face off of the rock before staking it.
She sits down on the ground and pulls a packet of cigarettes out of her pocket and lights one up.

CUT TO:
INT: Mission Control

Spike still has the gun to Henning’s head.

SPIKE
Get them to shut down the fences and open the gate.

HENNING
(to workers) Do what he says.

SPIKE
And Tap would you kindly relieve this man of his wallet.

TAP
Can do.

SPIKE
Good. Now listen carefully Henning. My friend is still alive so you get a reprieve for now. You come after us as we try to leave, I’ll kill you. You come after us after we leave, I’ll kill you and if you go after any of these kids ever again, I will kill you. Do I make myself clear?

HENNING
Crystal.

SPIKE
Good. C’mon kid, let’s go.

Spike turns to walk out.

SPIKE
Oh, and Henning?

HENNING
What?

Spike turns round and kicks him hard in the face knocking both him and his wheelchair over.

SPIKE
Don’t ever try this crap again.

Spike and Tap walk out.

CUT TO:
EXT: Outside the Fence

Spike, Faith and Tap stand by the bike.

SPIKE
How does freedom taste kid?

TAP
It tastes good.

FAITH
So I assume you’re heading straight for the next police station to turn yourself in.

TAP
Well you know I would, but I’m a marked man in the underworld. I’d be a walking target in any jail in this country.

SPIKE
What you gonna do then?

TAP
Take a leaf out of your book. Travel.

FAITH
Can you afford it?

TAP
Can you?

SPIKE
Kid has a point.

TAP
That reminds me, your share of his wallet.

Tap goes to hand him some money.

SPIKE
Keep it.

TAP
You sure?

SPIKE
Yeah.

TAP
OK. Well then. I’ll maybe see you guys around. Bye.

SPIKE
Bye.

FAITH
(disinterestedly) See ya.

Tap walks off in the other direction.

SPIKE
Where to now?

FAITH
Dunno, you’re drivin.

SPIKE
Well how about we see where the road takes us then.

FAITH
Sounds good to me.

END OF SHOW
