INT – HOTEL ROOM – DAY
FAITH
I'm not a heffa! I just like my Beef Jerky
SPIKE
$30 of Beef jerky!
FADE IN FROM BLACK
Spike and Faith step into a motel room.
Spike and Faith are staring around the room in disbelief . The wallpaper is hanging off the walls, there’s damp stains all up the corners and the carpet has holes in it.
SPIKE
Classy
FAITH
Says he who had a bath in dirty river
SPIKE
I fell in
FAITH
Right and you just figured you’d take your clothes off and rub yourself down
SPIKE
Least I tried washin’ with somethin’
FAITH
Dude, we were travelling for like six days straight – I just know how good your sense of smell is, figured I may as well get something out of it if you’re going to be the one doing all the rubbing down
Faith flashes a smile as Spike arches his brow – she pulls back the bed cover and sees stains all over the matress
FAITH
I call the tub
SPIKE
I don’t think so
FAITH
I do
Faith shoves past him and slams the bathroom door shut before locking it.
FAITH (O.S)
At least they clean one room in this place
We follows down through the several floors of the hotel and into the basement where, in the shadows we see a cage rattling as something growls inside.
Whatever’s inside is not the least bit happy and the cage shatters as they smash free and sprint for the basements window.
ROLL CREDITS
INT – LOBBY – DAY
The manager closes the safe as he spots one of the cleaners watching.
LARRY
What are you looking at?
CLEANER
Nothing. Sorry.
LARRY
You know that staff are forbidden from looking in the safe
CLEANER
I didn’t mean to… I’m sorry
LARRY
(in her face)
Just make sure you stay away from the basement okay?
EXT – LOBBY – DAY
Faith and Spike come trundelling down the stairs. Faith’s hair is dripping wet and Spikes is standing on end
SPIKE
You know…
FAITH
Don’t talk to me
SPIKE
This isn’t my fault
FAITH
How d’ya figure that?
SPIKE
I’m not the one who left the hairdryer behind
FAITH
No, that’s true. You’re the one who smashes it to pieces when you played “gun” out of the window of the damned car
SPIKE
If you’re gonna pick
FAITH
Shut up
Spike rolls his eyes before putting his hand in front of Faith’s chest to stop her
FAITH
Now you come round to the idea?
SPIKE
Look
Spike holds her wrist and walks her over to the window – there’s police cars everywhere, dozens of town folk are gathered, looking shocked.
FAITH
Murder?
SPIKE
Paramedics are here
FAITH
Let’s go
They walk outside of the building and push their ways to the front of the crowd where paramedics are loading a man onto the stretcher – he’s been beaten badly. His face is so swollen that it’s virtually unrecognisable.
SPIKE
Chef
FAITH
Huh?
SPIKE
It’s the Chef from where we’re staying
FAITH
How can you tell?
SPIKE
Same tattoo on his arm
FAITH
You met him?
SPIKE
Mid-night snack.
FAITH
I can’t believe you ate from this kitchen
SPIKE
Right, that’s the main focus right now
FAITH
So, what did this?
SPIKE
Beat’s me – but I’m bettin’ we can find out pretty easy
Spike looks over his shoulder where he sees the hotel manager looking extremely un-nerved as he paces with his cigarette.
CUT TO.
INT – LOBBY – DAY
The manager of the motel storms back inside where he is greeted by a very slobby looking and slightly overweight woman.
MARGERY
Have they asked you anything yet?
LARRY
No, they don’t know it’s him. They don’t know he works here
MARGERY
Worked here
LARRY
That’s what I meant. We need to cover this up – this isn’t the first time, they’re going to get suspicious
MARGERY
Going to get? Larry that young couple are our first guests in two years that have lasted the night
LARRY
I just don’t understand how it got out – Elliot must’ve left the cage unfastened when he fed her
MARGERY
I still don’t understand why we never shot the damn thing in the first place
Larry gives Margery a look that is so dark and cold that she actually raises her hand in defense as if he’s going to strike her
MARGERY
I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that
LARRY
You won’t say it again
MARGERY
No…No I won’t say it again
Margery stares in fear as Larry walks off – calm but definitely not collected.
CUT TO.
INT – BAR – DAY
Faith slams a mans face against the bar as the entire room falls silent
FAITH
Grab my ass again and yours will be getting real familiar with my boots, got it?
MAN
(through teeth)
Got it
Faith let’s go and walks back over to Spike
MAN
Crazy bitch
Faith spins back towards him but Spike grabs her by the arm and begins walking with her
SPIKE
Think you made enough of an entrance already
FAITH
Jerk
SPIKE
He’s just drunk
FAITH
Who said I was talking to him?
SPIKE
We all know how this one’s gonna go don’t we pet? You’re gonna spit acid until I outsmart you then you’ll make me feel awkward with innuendo
FAITH
It’s almost like you know my mind
SPIKE
Mind
FAITH
That’s what I said
SPIKE
Mind your head
Faith smacks her head straight onto a low pillar and falls to the floor
SPIKE
Watch the step too
Spike winks and ducks under as he follows the steps through to smoking area
END OF PART ONE
INT – TAVERN – NIGHT
SPIKE
You know I reckon I should be collecting shot glasses from all these places we’ve been to.
(takes a shot)
We’ve been at it since what? December – somehow we’ve ended up stopping everywhere from New York to bloody…where are we?
FAITH
Toronto
SPIKE
My point. We’ve crossed the border
FAITH
It’s because we’re on the run
SPIKE
Shame we don’t know what from – not exactly anyways. I need a second sidekick, someone who…
FAITH
I’m not your sidekick dude, you’re mine
SPIKE
(ignoring)
Someone with the smarts – a Willow or a Fred…not a Giles though. I like being the one with accent
FAITH
Wow. You’re nowhere near as deep as I had you down
SPIKE
Hey I’m deep
FAITH
Sure and I’m blonde and virginal
SPIKE
Likely
Both of them clink their shot glasses and down them as a young woman comes running into the bar, collapsing on the floor in tears as blood drips from her nose
Faith jumps up, knocking her stool over
FAITH
Are you okay?
APRIL
It…it got me…
FAITH
What did?
APRIL
The…I don’t know what it was…
Faith stares at Spike who nods at her before rushing out of the door
FAITH
(to the barmaid)
Can we get some help here?
CUT TO.
EXT – TAVERN – NIGHT
Spike spots dots of blood in the snow – April’s blood
SPIKE
I know you’re still out. Whatever you are.
Spike can feel that he’s being watched – he reacts to something in the bushes and cautiously approaches.
Spike falls to the ground as something leaps out at him
CUT TO.
INT – TAVERN – NIGHT
April is wiping the blood from her nose as she sits in the corner with Faith
FAITH
You okay?
APRIL
Yes…thank you.
FAITH
This kind of thing happen a lot around here?
APRIL
Once a month usually for a few days…
FAITH
I know the feeling, maybe it’s just some real pissed chica
APRIL
Maybe not.
FAITH
Is this the first time this happened to you?
APRIL
Yes. But there’s been stories for years now – ever since I was born, some people say it’s a werewolf…some people say…
(quiet)
Other things
FAITH
Did you see it?
APRIL
It…
(laughs)
Not it. Her
CUT TO.
EXT – TAVERN – NIGHT
Spike pushes the “it” off him – a young girl, maybe in her very early twenties, stares back at Spike, she scratches her face before “running” off on all fours.
Spike stares on in bewilderment.
CUT TO.
INT – MOTEL – NIGHT
Larry is sat in his office, the room is full of cigar smoke as he stirs a large whiskey in his hand – staring at a photo of him and his wife at their wedding
LARRY
Sweet, sweet Jemima
SPIKE (O.S)
You know all this smokin’
Spike walks in and over to the desk, he stubs out his cigarette on the table
SPIKE
It’s bad for your health
LARRY
What do you want?
SPIKE
Just came to give my sincerest condolence about the loss of your chef
LARRY
Thank you.
SPIKE
I don’t suppose you know anything about that now do you?
LARRY
You…err, you know something about health yeah?
Larry reaches into his draw
LARRY
How healthy are bullets?
Spike looks up to see that Larry is aiming a gun directly at him
FADE TO BLACK.
EXT – FOREST – NIGHT
Faith is scouring through the woods with a tranquiliser gun in her hands. She’s stepping with extreme caution – turning her head as rustling follows around her.
From nowhere, a dog jumps out and bares it’s teeth. Growling
FAITH
Hey Lassie – wanna take a nap?
The dog barks at Faith before running off into the woods, stopping to look back at her
FAITH
Okay, but if this is a trap – I’m getting a new rug
Faith follows the dog into the night
CUT TO.
INT – MOTEL – NIGHT
Margery is cleaning in the lobby as she finds that the “safe” is unlocked. Arching an eyebrow – she reaches for the door and slowly pulls it open.
She slowly pulls out a brown file and shoves it under her jacket before slamming the safe shut and rushing upstairs
CUT TO.
EXT – FOREST – NIGHT
Faith comes to a small opening through which the dog enters – Faith gives the entire area the once over before crawling in.
The dog calmly leads her into a pit of other dogs, at the centre, the young woman is sleeping peacefully. Her legs curled up by her side.
Faith stares in fascination before clicking her fingers low to the ground for the dog to come to her – the female dog does and it rolls onto it’s back as Faith strokes it’s stomach
FAITH
I owe you one girl.
Faith stands sharply and dashes out of the hole – as she leaves, the girls eyes dash open.
