The only advice i can offer you is that i live 15 miles away from hard knott and i will ride it a few times before this years event. I can manage it on a 34/25 and a 39/27. I've even seen one of my club mates ride up hard knott on a 39/23, however the ride itself is another matter. As others have pointed out, it depends on a number of factors; your ability, your fitness, and what's left in the tank. 38/27 will see you round the course, but when you see the red phone box approaching, it doesn't matter what you're turning it's going to hurt! if it didn't hurt everybody would be doing it. Once at the top you've done it and Wrynose isn't that difficult from the Cockley Beck side. good luck and enjoy it.
