i can only agree with your view here but have to also support the event as a whole.

everyone who enters should know the risks involved and enters at their own risk. bikes are also maintained at owners own risk, so placing more owness on race organisers could take some of these responsabilities away from riders.
i think that all that could be reasonably be asked of the race officials is a clear warning in the handbook and on the website about the roads, possibly a weather forecast at sign on and maybe some red warning flags at dangerous points on the route. one other option would be to request that all first timers drive or ride the 5 main descents before the event in order that they have at least seen the lay of the land.

this would not cost any more to officials so would not impact on the event, would not make the actual challenge any easier and may help cut down on the number of accidents.

at teh end of the day, if a 5 a side football competition had been held on sunday there would have been injuries and some may have been serious, its a fact of life.

i do also wish the unfortunat people who crashed a speedy and full recovery.
