There were prominent warnings at the top of all the descents and there were also warnings in the start information. I feel sorry for all those who crashed and hope that they are back on their bikes very soon, but they were warned and they should be able to use their own judgement. It was obvious that the roads are steep, with hairpins and the road surface is slick so ‘slippery when wet’. If the roads weren’t steep with hairpins, would there be so many people wanting to ride? The road should be resurfaced, but that is hardly the fault of the organiser.

The only criticism that I think can levelled is that the same prominence is given to the warnings on all the descents and clearly some are more challenging than others. I believe that Honister is considered to be particularly hazardous and crashes are not uncommon, possibly because it is the first technical descent and riders unfamiliar with the roads don’t realise how dangerous some of the descents can be. Perhaps Honister and Hard Knott should have specific warnings.
