Subject: Membership update

According to the current roster page, we're up to nine members. Pretty impressive given that the guild is barely a week and a half old! Here's some stuff you all should know regarding the membership.

Currently we have 5 people using AIM, 4 using MSN (I use both), and Jesse is not contributing at the moment. He's expressed a desire to stay out of things until the game launches, because he doesn't have much free time. That was understood when we launched the guild, which is why you won't see him online.

As thing stand now, we have seven underofficers, currently expressed as six lieutenants and a sergeant. I'm in a major bind, because I'm not sure how to deal with rankings. I don't want them to be purely ceremonial (see the "Ranks, explained" thread) but I also don't want them to be a point of competition among the guild. Originally I stated that ranks would be based on seniority and total gameplay experience; it looks now as if frequency of gameplay might enter into things on a very small level. If the function of the higher ranks is indeed to provide in-game mediation and arbitration (see "Ranks, explained"), then I'll want those personalities to be people who are online frequently. Of course, it is not set in stone that this will be the purpose of ranks at all, and that is totally subject to change. I won't do anything that's unpopular with the membership, but I would like to hear other ideas on the matter, even a simple agree/disagree. The reason I bring this up now is that a ratio of six lieutenants to one sergeant is higher than I aim for; I'm hoping for two to three lieutenants per sergeant, and the same ratio of sergeants per colonel. In other words, there's a promotion on the horizon for somebody soon, but I don't want it to be a big deal, so I'm in a major bind.

Now that the Long Paragraph from Hell is officially over, on to lighter things. The Beta e-mail is supposed to come out this Friday; anyone who gets in will be expected to taunt the rest of us mercilessly with how incredibly awesome it is. If we have any who get in to beta, or if I can establish communication with a guild that has a member who's in beta, be thinking of questions you want to ask them. Things about races and classes are up there on the list, other stuff you want decided while taking into account what kind of character you want to play.

Back on the rank thing, there are a few people who want to play Horde, though most tend toward Alliance. Is it worth setting up a separate roster, with separate ranks, for the horde guys since we can't party together? I don't want to unilaterally declare that everyone has to be one faction or another, since that defeats the whole point of casual gaming, so something will have to be done sometime before the game comes out. I'm suggesting it now so people can start thinking of ideas.

Thanks for the patience while all this gets sorted out. The pre-release period will probably be chaotic for everyone involved. I'm open to any ideas or suggestions; this guild is by players and for players after all, and I don't want to do anything that ruins the experience for any of you.

Stay tuned.

Jim
