THANK GOD!! I am very happy to hear it's no where else! Believe me that's a good thing!! You wouldn't happen to know the name of the drug he will be on, do you? That regiment sounds like he'll probably be on Taxol or Taxotere. Are you planning on going to see him?

My dad starts chemo tomorrow. My mom wrote to me: "The drugs they are using are Carboplatin and Taxol. Two the first day, then Taxol only for two more visits, a week apart. Then a week off and start cycle again." So you were right about the Taxol.

Hi Cliff. Actually I've seen lots of people have to take the combination of carboplatin and taxol. The taxol will make him lose a lot of his hair, if not all of it everywhere. They will probably give him Benadryl and some anti-nausea medications through the IV each time he goes. The Benadryl will make him very sleepy so I hope your Mom can be there with him to take him home or at least can pick him up when he's finished. They give the Benadryl to counter-act any allergic reactions. It doesn't happen to everyone but some people do have some reactions. They will monitor him closely the first time they give him the chemo so they have a good idea how he will react. That is if there is any reaction at all.

I've never taken carboplatin but I did take taxol. I would highly recommend a port-a-cath if he is going to be on chemotherapy for a while. It certainly makes chemotherapy treatments and blood tests A LOT easier. How are you doing with all this? Are you going to go visit him?

He had his first session today. I tried to call this evening, but I couldn't get through--the line was busy. But one of my brothers talked to my folks. They said the first session went well, with no noticeable side effects. My dad had said the he had made up his mind that he was not going to get nauseous! He may lose hair, but he doesn't have much to lose! Apparently the doc told him it probably wouldn't affect his facial hair--he was glad to hear that, because he's had a mustache since the late 1940's! They haven't mentioned a port-a-cath, so I guess the doc hasn't recommended one at this point.

I'm doing fine--I guess I'm naturally optimistic. I'm trying to figure out when I can get up there to see them--I have to work around Patrick's school, and I'd have to coordinate with the rest of the family--my folks don't have a big house!
