ARE YOU READY FOR THIS??

The following information is from WBAL Channel 11 news and WJZ Channel 13 news.

(WBAL) Officials Expect Millions Of Cicadas To Reemerge This Spring. Cicadas Emerge Every 17 Years, After Underground Feeding Period.

BALTIMORE -- After 17 years underground, millions of cicadas will emerge throughout Maryland and the East Coast this spring.

The critters are harmless to humans and animals -- they do not bite or sting -- but their egg-laying may cause some plant damage, according to Maryland Department of Agriculture officials. The last time the cicadas emerged was in 1987 when as many as 100,000 cicadas per acre disrupted outdoor events and sounded off with loud, almost deafening mating calls.

"They're coming out, they're ready, they're prime, they're going to be all over the place, probably 12 or 15 per square foot," said professor Dr. Mike Raupp.

(WJZ) The time frame for this year's cicada invasion has been moved up thanks to mother nature. The seventeen year cicada should now appear around May 5th or 6th instead of late May as originally predicted. The change is because of warmer weather in the last few week. The cicadas need a ground temperature of 64 degrees to climb out of their holes in the ground. Right now, the temperature is rapidly approaching that figure. Experts say the positive side of the cicadas arriving earlier is that their six week stay will be over sooner than expected.
