Hello Cinderella Ladies
First off, a conversation that includes American Idol would not be complete this year without a big shout out to Janelle. A Cinderella International Teen. CONGRATULATIONS Janelle!!!
Now, back to using American Idol as a tool for learning. I am constantly thinking of ways to give you information that will help in your growth and desire to do well in your competitions. Sometimes it is through an example, or in the words of others. While watching American Idol over the years there have been many moments from the show that I would have liked to have used as examples during a coaching session with someone. Even if you’re not a regular viewer of American Idol, I suggest you all watch for at least a few weeks to see if you can figure out why you focus on certain performers more than others? What is it that makes us sit up and notice some people, while others blend in with the crowd? The fact is, at this point in the show, we know everyone can sing…really well. So it’s not mere technical ability that gets the votes.
You may be wondering, “what does this have to do with me, Adam?” I thought you’d never ask.
Let’s compare Top Five in Cinderella to Top Eight (which is where we are this week) on Idol. Just like the contestants on the show, you come into your pageant with all of your training, the hours and hours of rehearsal, and the one thing, the only thing that really sets you apart: YOU. You see, as participants are eliminated, the competition gets increasingly intense, and you must find a way to connect with your talent presentation, allowing us to see who you are. How you feel. What you think.
From the beginning of the season, this panel of judges has emphasized making a connection with the audience; that it’s not about getting it “right,” but about moving the audience. The easiest way to do this is to let your presentation move you emotionally. Without that, there is little chance you’ll be able to move your audience. If your performance takes you on a journey, it is next to impossible not to bring your audience and the judges along…and score as you never have before.
And finally the big dawg on the show, Randy Jackson said the following speaking to one of the contestants, and it’s exactly what I am trying to convey. Of course, he said it in his own inimitable way: “I kept thinking about the honesty of your delivery. Here I am, here's what I do, like it, not, whatever judges, whatever THIS is just who I am, and this is all I can really be. And you know what? I like that, and I applaud that, because I think a lot of people come up here and they want to give us what we think they should be. You gave us exactly who you are.”
Over the past nine years I’ve been honored to be part of the learning process of many Cinderella girls and women on their way to Top Ten, Top Five, State and International overall titles. What I have found to be of most value is the work we did to uncover and enhance who they truly are and what sets them apart. With these tools, you too will be able to connect emotionally and stand out, not only in your talent presentation, but in every facet of the pageant. And, most importantly, in your life.
State and International pageants are quickly approaching. If I can be of any help with your preparations, or if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Wishing you all the best.
